About the “A Place at the Table” Project:
As many of us have read and heard, nearly fifty million individuals in the United States are food insecure, not knowing where their next meal is coming from. In Hawaii it is estimated that one in five persons, including children, may be food insecure. Unfortunately, the numbers are growing!
Nobel Purpose Network, KEY Project and the Ko`olaupoko Unit of Queen Lili`uokalani Children’s Center have partnered together to invite members of the Northern Ko’olau community to a private screening and strategic conversation around the acclaimed documentary, “A Place at the Table.”
This social action campaign is a national effort, created by Active Voice and Participant Media with support fromThe Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, to ignite conversation and spur action around solutions to our nation and community hunger and obesity epidemics. The centerpiece of the campaign is the documentary.
A Place at the Table which examines hunger in America through the lens of three people struggling with food insecurity.
KEY Project previously partnered with Active Voice and Participant Media in 2010, with the screening of Food, Inc. As some of you may recall, this was a disturbing film that helped to “lift the veil” on our nation’s food industry.
It served as a catalyst to birth several community initiatives, shifted the thinking and behaviors of literally hundreds of individuals and families, and remains to be a topic of discussion throughout our community.
With “A Place at the Table,” we have again been invited to assist these three national non-profit organizations to facilitate a local discussion. Our role, as one of twenty-five sites nationwide, is to present public screenings. Our intent is that the film will stimulate open conversation and dialogue among our community members to inspire local actions and collaborations. With your involvement as a participant in this screening, we will add island voices to a much-needed nationwide conversation.
We will be joined by others with a diversity of backgrounds from agriculture, education, healthcare, social work, strategic planning, policy and more. Join us to learn about the issue, help design and develop our community plan, provide insights from your perspective and help brainstorm ways we can collaborate and utilize this film to prompt solutions to hunger, obesity and poverty in the Northern Ko’olau region.

“You are not IN the universe, you ARE the
universe, an intrinsic part of it. Ultimately you are not a person, but a focal point where the universe is becoming conscious of itself. What an amazing miracle.”
